my tinfoil hat thought is that ridiculous conspiracy theories like qanon were purposefully made up by spooks in the government to provide cover for things like this so when people bring up their concerns about something real but too insane to be believed (the truth stranger than fiction) theyre painted as crazy.
Look at how people on the left respond to those seeking ballot recounts to validate suspicious election results. They're immediately called "blueanon" and chastized as though seeking a recount is the same as storming the capital. As though a party that stole the 2000 election in plain sight would never do it again. As though the man who demanded more votes from Georgia's mayor and tried to install faithless electors backed by a foreign power and the literal richest man in the world and tried to instigate a coup couldn't *possibly* try to cheat.
Supposedly, the Roswell NM crash was just an experimental aircraft, but when people came up with the Alien conspiracy theory, the government was like, "let's stoke that flame!".
